Blog Action Day 2010: Water is an ingredient of Human Rights

Water is often overlooked as a key ingredient to beer, although it may be the most important to it’s taste.  Access to clean, safe water is usually the first decision a brewer needs to make in order to practice their craft, whether the humble homebrewer or microbrewery. Water is used to yield the noblest hops and any number of grains, and is used as every stage of a beer’s life from harvest to bottling to distribution and consumption.  And after a night overindulging of tasty beer, cold water is a refuge we turn to rehydrate ourselves.  In short Water is something us beer snobs take for granted until we don’t have it nearby.

Yet millions of people around the world lack access to this fundamental resource, which the United Nations has identified as a basic human right. This year’s Blog Action Day proposes to do something about this:

We know how to provide this access, but it’s going to take a little investment.  Please consider taking a minute to contribute towards a worthy cause, and you’ll be able to toast your friends with pride this weekend with a donation that will make a difference for years to come.  Cheers to clean water and tasty beer!
