Visiting NYC’s Washington Heights neighborhood in September, I decided to take an inventory of Mexican lagers. First up I tried an old favorite, Tecate, paired with chips and salsa (what else?). Tecate is among Mexico’s best lagers, exhibiting a crisp, slightly sweet taste.
Next I tested a light beer: Presidente Light. Although it compared well to other light beers, I thought it needed a higher gravity like its parent lager. The result of their light brewing process was a watery beer.
A few weeks later I tried Dos Equis (for the first time in recent memory). It has a clean lager taste, but it lacks any gravity.
As far as these Mexican lagers go, I’d probably pass for a Modelo.
